The United Nations, UN, has expressed concerns about the effect and true magnitude of the spread of coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria, compared to countries mostly affected, saying it was yet unclear.

According to the global body, the quality of response to the disease must match the scale of the crisis.

UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr Edward Kallon, who stated this during the launch of Nigeria/UN COVID-19 Basket Fund in Abuja, said: “This is a trying moment for all of us as our shared humanity is under threat of COVID-19 pandemic.

‘’Societies around the globe are in turmoil and economies are in a nose-dive.

It is still unclear what the true magnitude of the spread and impact of the virus will look like in Nigeria.

The available emerging evidence is, however, clear. The only effective response to the COVID-19 pandemic is testing, isolation and contact-tracing.

“From preliminary macro and micro social economic analysis, the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to place immense pressure on Nigeria’s healthcare system and will result in a serious economic and fiscal pressure with a risk of a negative social impact, if proactive measures are not taken to prevent, prepare, respond and cushion the economic impact of the pandemic.

“The International Monetary Fund has reassessed the global prospect for growth for 2020 and 2021, declaring that we have entered a recession – as bad as or worse than in 2009.

‘’We must respond decisively, innovatively and together to suppress the spread of the virus and address the socio-economic devastation that COVID-19 is causing in our world today.

  1. THERE IS COVID — 19 IN NIGERIA. BUT THE FIGURES NIGERIA GOVERNMENT ARE BRINGING OUT TO THE WORLD IS FAKE. I SEE NO REASON BORROWING A COUNTRY MONEY ALWAYS WHEN THE NIGERIAN POLITICIANS LOOTS MONEY GREATER THAN THAT AND THOSE MONEY ARE IN AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN BANKS.IMF GIVE NIGERIA OIL COUNTRY MONEY. INSTEAD TO GIVE TO SUDAN

  2. If these are the words of UN Resident Coordinator, then this your caption/headline is misleading and gross violation of the ethics of journalism

  3. Nigerians are stronger than the virus, thank God you guys realized quick if not our government will keep collecting your donations all in the name of COVID 2020 lol.

  4. The world is surprise of the spread, recovery and death rate in Nigeria. There must be factors working in our favour. We are religious people. Let’s take that as a constant factor.
Our government and scientists are not visionary enough to find out that the factors imitating against the spread can be the cure.
The lockdown here is a child’s play, interaction among people is high enough to ignite the pandemic predicted for this country yet the spread is still very slow. The government should not take the glory because they have failed us.
Africa is not hit as predicted and I think it is so because the developed nations have been pumping us with one vaccine or the other. I strongly believe that is one of the reasons we have some resistance.
The developed nations have for aeon stopped all vaccine inoculations because the so believe in the purity of their environment. So they live without any immunity introduced into their bodies like they make us do.

  5. Little wonder the government keep increasing the number of patients astronomically over the night to deceive WHO.
